haha, I always get a laugh when I see some of the airport names. Attaturk, the butcher of Armenia, a Lenin-ophile happy to murder tens of thousands of innocent people, now the Turks regard him as a national hero
only worse one is the airport at Ulan-Bator, incredibly named Genghis Khan international!!! Greatest mass-murderer of all times, made Hitler look like a choir boy. But now, again a national icon. Who knows, in 600 years time I wonder if history has also forgotten, and we will see the Adolf Hitler Berlin spaceport!!!

just put my bis in for an auction here in HK Sunday.... Burgs back to 1976 and a few Baroli back to 1955. Also had a lash at a few Dal Forno, but not likely to get, I think. And a couple of double mags, from 2010, where it seems you can't go wrong.
Thought about a couple of bottles from 1937 Barolo, but I think it might be vinegar by now hehe.

ON the purchasing side, picked up a dozen 2010 Siro Pacenti Brunello in HK for $80/bottle, which seems to be a good price. Suckling 100pts, so I thought what the hell when I got the offer. No idea what is like, Jamie, maybe you can set me straight??

I love these wines. The 2011 Reserve is a baby at the moment and needs either a long decant or 5-10 years in the cellar. Talking to Alex McKay who makes these wines, he reckons the 2011 Reserve is a keeper.

Let us know how you go with your tastings. We had a Marked Tree 2008 the other night. Really good and loads left in the tank.

Your description of Attaturk is akin to painting the Sistine Chapel with a roller brush. To call him "the butcher of Armenia" is a grotesque exaggeration. It is rather timely that you mention this as April 24th, 1915 is considered by many to be the start of the Armenian genocide/massacre/holocaust as that is the day Ottoman authorities arrested Armenian intellectuals and community leaders in Istanbul (then Constantinople), followed by deportations, forced marches and deaths. At this time Ataturk (Mustafa Kemal Pasha as he was known then) was an officer in the Gallipoli peninsula and under the command of a German general. As most Australians know the Gallipoli landings commenced the following day, on April 25, 1915. I am not aware of Ataturk's role in framing or executing the policies of the Ottoman Government towards the Armenians during the First World War.

Ataturk came to national prominence after the war when he lead Turkish nationalist forces and became a national hero in the 1920s. To say "now the Turks regard him as a national hero" is bizarre. He has been their hero for a very long time.

Speaking of airport names I bet you don't know that the Dorval airport in Montreal was renamed the Peirre Elliot Trudeau airport after the former Prime Minister of Canada. He happens to be much reviled by many in Western Canada and particularly so by conservatives in Alberta - also by French-speaking separatists in Quebec.

Felix, history is better understood using fine brush strokes.

Actually, "off topic" occurred 12 posts earlier - my post was only a response.

My recent purchases for summer drinking were a couple of really fine inexpensive wines:

2010 Bodega Martinez Payva 'Fince el Tesso' Tempranillo, Ribera del Guadiana, Spain, 13.5%, and
2011 Borgo di Colloredo Malvesia, Molise, Italy, 13%

Both were about $10 per bottle and drank really well, lots of fruit and a savoury element. If inexpensive Australian wines drank like this.................

Good to see you are buying 9+ year old wines to let sleep longer. Were these at auction or retail?

The 13 Head wines weren't covered in as much media glory as the 12s. Is the latest vintage back on song?

Yes, bought retail, but not so much for long-term cellaring, just to have something older on hand while the rest of the cellar matures (most wines only go back to 2006). If I strike one that is outstanding and needs a while longer I might get more.

I have never had a crook Head Wines wine, though the Pinot is less spectacular IMHO. I bought a case of the 13s (half shiraz / half GSM) as I often do - don't usually worry to much about the reviews. I haven't touched the 2013s yet. The 2014 Shiraz is definitely a Head red. Great depth of flavour and, more importantly, complexity and interest for the price point. Buy with confidence.....
