Post by WinePupil »

This month started with a pretty good high. Looking forward to the stonewell that will be opening next year.

1x 2013 Grosset Polish Hill Riesling
3x 2010 Reschke Vitilus Cab Sauv
1x NV Sepplet Fleur De Lys Chardy Pinot Noir

Out of the 3 vitilus, 1 to drink now and 2 to cellar for 5 years

Petaluma "Coonawarra" 2010 x6.... got a $30 voucher for their "new" online store (which looks the same as before and remains largely useless) which brought these under $50/bottle ... I have been meaning to include more Coonawarra wine in my cellar

4 x 2012 Bin 389

3 x 2010 Bin 150

4 x Krug NV

And I am really going to try and keep it to that for the month, unless I can find a chance to try a sparkling shiraz or two and find one I like in which case there might be a few of those added

Just got home from the UnWined tasting in a Subiaco park. WA producers, naturally. Mixed cases from each of the following producers:

Robert Bowen oaked SB, Pemberley Pinot Noir and Robert Bowen Cabernet

Castelli Estate Riesling, Shiraz and lots of Cabernet

Higher Plane Chardonnay, Cabernet and Messenger Cab Franc dominant Bordeaux blend (all five varieties, each no less than 18%, I think)

Also bought six packs of Penfolds Bin 389 2012, Plantagenet Riesling 2014, Coldstream Hills Chardonnay and Pinot Noir among other things recently.

And a dozen Picardy - mostly chardonnay, but some pinot as well.

And I was telling myself I don't need more wine .......

Great haul Allan

I was at Unwined yesterday and have to say I was very impressed. I could have gone berserk on the purchases but didn't. Ended up with a half case of the Silkwood pinot and a few Castelli Rieslings which had a big impact on - very very good young Riesling.

Mark

Spoilt for choice of late. Last week Hentely Farm tasting in Scarborough, yesterday Unwined and in a few weeks the Howard Park tasting at Royal Fresh Water Bay. Life's good.

I was too tempted by a mystery wines 24 hour discount offer, succumbed. The Mount Barker riesling 2013 is reckoned to be Plantagenet in another forum's white wine section. The Frankland River shiraz 2011 I reckon is Ferngrove Dragon; the TN on the seller's site is almost a reflection of JH's (94pts) and similar to CM's (91pts) so I've ordered a 6pk of each at $13.20 and $14 per bottle delivered, respectively.

I expect to be a few hundred dollars lighter after the Howard Park tasting too, Mark. Especially riesling and chardonnay.

Hi Daz. If it is the Plantagenet riesling, $13.20 is a really good buy. I buy six (or more) of this wine every year and cellar at least half of it. Stocks back to 2008, with the odd older bottle.

Missed out on a DM of Giacosa Falletto, seems the boys went very very hard on that one.

A good guy I always catch up with and you may bump into him in Oz. Olek Bondonio's Cru vineyard in Roncagliette, I kid you not, sits between the great vineyards of Costa Russi and Sori Tildin. there are just the three vineyards in the tiny Cru on the road from Barbaresco to Treiso.

96 x Barbaresco DOCG 2011

72 x Barbaresco DOCG Roncagliette 2011

24 x Langhe DOC Nebbiolo 2012

6 x Barbaresco DOCG Roncagliette 2011 magnum

3 x Barbaresco DOCG 2011 magnum

60 x Dolcetto d'Alba 2013

HA, no a great bloke and I'm trying to lead many a horse to water. I've offered all these to my wine and work friends so they are pretty much gone and I'll keep about 5 cases myself.

2011 was a great Barbaresco vintage though I'm worried about Roncagliette being near 15%. Must ask him about that I'm visiting in a few weeks. Remind him he's not making wine in the Southern Vales anymore.

Maybs, I'm with you...need to move to Honkers today...If Gav ever has an Auswine Hall of Fame, Jamie will be a shoe in for induction at legendary status.

Back filling on 05 Bordeaux...I am sitting here in Adelaide laughing as I read that stuff, contemplating a modest Rockford purchase and +/- a few 2102 Mt Ed.

An offline with Jamie holding court has just moved up the bucket list a few notches

Cheers

Not the sort of wines you associate with Xmas, but these have been bought for the xmas festivies

3 * La Bota "Florpower" Nr 53 - A re-release of Nr 44, but with an extra year under the flor. Sherry meets Jura is the simplest description.
4 * 2012 Domaine Gilles Berlioz Vin de Savoie Chignin-Bergeron "Les Filles" - Great wine, but I bought it for the label.
2 * 2011 Domaine Gilles Berlioz Vin de Savoie Chignin-Bergeron Les Fripons - could not get any *11 Les Filles (even better wine and label), so bought this instead
This is my church, this is where I heal my hurts.

Only buying imported wines now, prices will be going up soon with AUD collapsing.

And if it falls a long way, there could be the odd situation of imported wines leaving Oz minus the taxes.

Extreme currency movements can bring amazing wine bargains.

Very modest collection by local HKG standards and loaded in an eclectic style - Austrian sad blanc for example.

The Italians I've listed are all under $30USD! Striking value.

Agreed,
If you are raving about $30 Italians then I take it they are great VFM and indeed are good wines.
Have an opportunity to do 10 days in Italy in September 2015.
It will be the first time that I could actually look at any of these wines properly.

Yes with tax rates of 2-17% and not being gouged by Australian wine companies because they think they can, Honkers Jamie sounds like the place to be when it comes to getting a few bottles.

Cheers Craig.

I finally caved and bought 3 x 2012 Penfolds Bin 389

One will be a present for my wife's sister who has just finished her law degree (it is her favourite wine, and the last bottle of 389 she opened to celebrate finishing was oxidised, probably from a banged up screw cap seal).

Interestingly, and both going quite off-topic, and opening a very tired old can of worms, I'd say that I have had a higher proportion of oxidised wines under screw cap (from damage to the seal) than I have had TCA affected wines under cork. This is probably largely due to my relative youth, and the fact that most of the wine I drink that is under cork is pretty good quality, with presumably equally good-quality cork, but still... I assiduously check the top of any bottle I buy now, and it is one of my main fears from buying wine over the internet, is that I cannot check the integrity of the seal prior to purchase. Indeed, I suspect that some of the larger online retailers who have their "amazing special offers" have picked up consignments on the cheap that have been sitting on the bottom of a pallet (palate, palette :) )that have been jostled and sustained some damage... I've certainly had a higher proportion of dinged up capsules in some of these discount case buys I have made over the years..

So....I mentioned to the wife I wanted to buy some champagne for memorable celebrations and she made the mistake of suggesting that was a good idea and giving me her imprimatur to lash out a little...so I did, but because I am quite fond of her and can't afford a divorce, I didn't go to crazy

4x Pol Roger 2004
2 x 2002 Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill

I've seen a lot of damaged screw-caps at the major retail stores so I inspect carefully when purchasing there. The majority of my purchases come from smaller reputable online stores and I've never had a damaged screw-cap from any of them. On the rare occasion where I've had a bad bottle for some other reason (e.g. corked) they've always sent me a brand new replacement no questions asked.
