International Grenache Day - 19 September
International Grenache Day - 19 September
The third Friday of September means that it is International Grenache Day (and this year just happens to fall on Talk Like a Pirate Day). I've got a 2012 Gomersal Grenache lined up for tonight. What else is everyone drinking tonight? Garnacha, CDP, GSM? So many good options
I was waiting for a moment, but that moment never came

Planning to have a 2012 Kay Brothers Amery Vineyards Basket Pressed Grenache tonight.

2011 A Tribute to Grace from the US is a must and a 2012 Jauma Danby or 2007 Gibsons Old Vine for contrast, depending on how I'm feeling

I don't hear too much about grenache from the US (except for the SQN's). Will be interested to hear how this one goes. Gibson's one of my faves and Jauma on my "must try" list too.

Not happy I have a bad Sinus infection and can't even taste anything at the moment. Grenache is my favourite.
Happy International Grenache Day to all the Grenache lovers out there!
Cheers

If you had to choose between drinking great wine or winning Lotto, which would you choose - Red or White?

I tried this in the barrel when I was over there and thought it was remarkable. The winemaker is Angela Osbourne a kiwi and very talented. The 2010 was extraordinarily perfumed and simply a revelation. Unique.

Is having Grenache blends cheating?
Kalleske Clarry’s GSM 2012 Intense black ruby-purple colour, a fresh sweet bouquet of black plums, blackberries, mulberry jam, hints of black olives and espresso roast. A full-bodied wine as expected from the warm ripe vintage conditions of 2012. A fine silky texture, high acidity with a young block of grainy tannins. 14.5% alc, but masked by a brilliant richness on the palate. Pure flavours of blackberries, plum skins, berry jam, coffee grits on the finish. The finish is gradual but extended, fades off nicely.
Mas de Libian Vin de Petanque 2011, Coteaux de l’Ardèche Made with 100% destemmed fruit, consisting of 75% Grenache and 25% Syrah which are co-fermented. Intense ruby crimson colour, fresh pretty aromas of strawberry leaf and blackberry jam. A delicious full-bodied wine, silky texture and plenty of fruit acidity. The tannins are very fine and diffuse, relatively absent for a red wine. You do sense the 13% alc. Lovely rich fruit, like pulling a handful of blackberries right out of the fridge and crunching into them.
Domaine de l’Oratoire St Martin Cuvee Prestige 2010, Cairanne, Cotes du Rhone 60/40 blend of Grenache and Mourvedre that sent 18 months ageing in large old foudres. Pours as intense ruby-purple colour. Fresh, dense aromas of black cherries, stewed dark berry fruit, musky spice and licorice. A full-bodied wine with high acidity and grippy tannins. Mouthfeel is angled and robust, with rich flavours of cherry and dark berries. Has aged nicely and will last a few more.
