August Wine Acquisitions 2014

Post by Luke W »

Got suckered into the Halliday hype and bought some Xanadu Stevens Road Cabernet and Xanadu Reserve Cabernet - both 2011 I think. Halliday gave the former his wine of the year and 99 points and the latter 97. Probably means they're just drinkable!

They've been making good stuff for awhile...Not 99 points good though..

Their Reserve Chardonnay is pretty good as well...

Really? It's not released until Sept 2nd. Where did you get it from?

Cheers, Travis.

That'll be the Shiraz Viognier you're probably thinking of?

Correct! Bugger. Funny how my brain just defaults to the SV when it reads V.

Thanks for correcting me. Thought I was going mad.

Cheers, Travis.

Is the Metala white label you are all talking about the Shiraz cab or the Shiraz Malbec??

Generally the punters here are referring to the shiraz cab blend Shane.
However, there is nothing wrong with the malbec blend, I have quite a bit of both.

Can't believe these are going for $166 on Langtons at present!

I picked up 24 x 375ml bottles at less than half the full bottle price. Great for mid week when a bottle is too much (or late Friday night when a bottle wasn't enough..... ).

Also:
12 x various Old Plains/Longhop wines (seriously impressed by the Terreno Grenache and Power of One Shiraz - will get more)
6 x 2012 Bandwagon (also known as the Metal Shiraz/Cab)

Cheers

I'm interesting in trying the Stevens Road '11, I've enjoyed Xanadu Wines before.

I've been overseas, have I missed the boat due to the hype or do some places in Melbourne still have stock? Any recommendations are appreciated.

Was it the regular Millesime? Or Special Club?

As an aside, they have a great museum at the winery if you ever get there...

Firstly welcome to the forum vin78.
From what I can gather the wine was sold out at the winery a day before it's official release to the public on aug 1st. I found a few bottles online at one of the large retailers, which is also out of stock now.
The current bid of $172 at langtons is just ridiculous!

Hi Mike
Just the normal. From Ross Duke. Didn't offer the Special Club, they must be restricted because Duke hasn't offered them in some time.

3 x 2004 Wolf Blass White Label Aged Release Chardonnay
1 x 2007 Wolf Blass White Label Aged Release Chardonnay
2 x 2005 Alain Gallety La Syrare
4 x 2013 Bodegas y Viñedos Mengoba Bierzo Brezo
1 x 2010 Moric Blaufrankisch
1 x 2012 Bodega Amalaya Torrontés

I tried the Brezo at Love, Tilly Devine last weekend and just had to have some. It's has a wonderful combination of nutty, honeyed fruit with a saline tang that will be perfect for summer. It's beautifully constructed wines like this at only $25 that illustrate why Bierzo is considered a 'hot' region.
