Sending wine from France to Australia

Does anyone know if it is is cost effective to send wine (maybe just a case or two) from France (whilst on holidays there) back to Australia?

Will the postal fees bring the cost up to what you would pay for the wine in Australia anyway? And will customs ask for their share of import taxes too? Obviously I can bring a few bottles back in our luggage, but was wanting to know if it is worth the effort to bring more home?

At a guess, with 55%-ish duty and transport costs it will be even more expensive than buying locally. Be interested to see how you proceed as I'm about to start doing this myself ( though I get heavily discounted air freight ).

It is probably cheaper to just pay for extra luggage (I think some places are as low as 100 for a prebooked extra bag).

You'd probably have to pay duty on the way in (although see the other thread where sometimes they can't be bothered) but at least it is only going to take a day to get to AU so it limits any funny storage situations you'll get by sending it by freight....assuming they don't lose it...

I think if you ship it you WILL pay duty...At least if you take it with you there is a chance you don't...

Out of interest I have done an extensive study of excess baggage charges as part of my recent move to London (I brought nearly 90kg with me) ... Most airlines now charge on a per weight basis which is ridiculously expensive (e.g. 10kg extra = $500!!!)

The best airline I found of the majors was BA which allows you to pay per piece... for US$500 I could bring 4 checked bags up to 23KG each. If you have Gold status or fly business then I think the bags can be 30KG each.

If I fly from London, I go either BA or JAL. 3 x 32kg in Business or First, and about $180 per 32 kg bag (or in my case, box) thereafter.

GST = cost of purchase inc shipping + 5% duty + volume duty = total @10%

These are the rates for spirits. Wine has WET applied on value, not a volumetric tax.

Sometimes Customs seem to mix up the spirits and wine and that's when I get slugged another 5% which is in gap's formula. Generally they are pretty generous so I don't argue too much.

I sent a 6 pack back from Argentina last year and it cost me about $80 in taxes upon arrival. I don't think it's any cheaper but you will have better variety.

Agree 100 per cent. No wonder this clown is into spam - I had a quick check of the French wines on his website that he puts in his posts and it' mostly dreary rubbish.
