July 2014 Purchases
Re: July 2014 Purchases
A dozen 2010 Metala...see the 2012 got a top gold at the Queensland show...not that that means much, I buy every year regardless.
A couple of mixed cases of Wynns cheapies from the chains...silly prices, but then I am silly enough to keep buying them.
Cheers

Nothing wrong with Metala's ...good honest simple wines without the hype.

Hi Dan, very interested to hear what these are like when you open them. Haven't had any Semillon with this age on them before. Hopefully you get good bottles.

Re: July 2014 Purchases
I picked up a dozen 2012 Metala Shiraz Cabs (White label). Hard to go past at $13/bottle as the goto weekday wine. Probably should have got a couple of cases, so that some an get put aside for a few years.

Hi dave, I'd be interested in any tasting notes of the St Henri 96. I've one bottle of two left that I'm thinking is at or near maximum cellaring potential, if not a little over.

Hi Daz,
This thread viewtopic.php?f=1&t=13924&p=115262 contains a combined tasting note for a bottle I shared with some friends a few months ago. In short, was drinking superbly! Can't see it improving further, but I don't think it was going downhill yet either. Based on how much I enjoyed that bottle I bought three more with plans to drink over the next year or two at most. Fingers crossed they are in as good a condition.
Thanks Dave! I've been wondering whether to leave it until it's 20yo before extracting the cork which hopefully is TCA- free.
Cheers

Metala shiraz cab 2012 is probably the best I've had of this label. Campbell Mattinson seems to concur, rating it 92pts.
Here's my TN:
Metala Shiraz Cabernet 2012 develops very nicely with time in glass, an enduring Langhorne Creek affordable classic that can be found for $11-$14. There's sweet, juicy, black cherry/blackberry deep-seated fruit with savoury bacon undertones, enough cedar oak and a touch of eucalypt to add complexity to the good medium+ length on the finish. Tannins are ripe and soft, acid is soft - bottle no. 030809. I think this is the best vintage I've had of Metala "White Label". In better vintages such as 2012, there are few wines that can match the value here.

+1 billion from me Daz.
I have a couple of dozen of the 2012 but will happily commit to case or two more, as long as the chains see this as a loss leader for me its a no brainer.
Best VFM in Australia bar none...and great cellaring prospect.

Re: July 2014 Purchases
The fruit in the 2012 Metala White Label is big, good, and pretty seamlessly integrated between the cab and the shiraz - plums, blackcurrants, a touch of cedar and eucalypt. The oak is still hanging way out there, finishing with a touch of resinous bitterness when first opened, but settles down after a day or two. It needs a few years yet to come together IMO, but right now has that big dark, rustic Young Aussie Red thing going on that I find pretty irresistible.
Good on TWE for not messing with this wine over the years, i.e. up-bracketing the price or turning it into a multi-regional blend. I wonder if it has just flown under the radar, or if it has some sentimental traditionalists championing it within the company.

Thanks Will,
I've only had one bottle (a mildly corked 1986 Mount Pleasant Lovedale Semillon) that old, I will definitely report back. No guarantees for either bottle though, unfortunately.

Just opened the first bottle and it is real good. Excellent QPR. Thommo's notes are spot on although I got some jubes on the palate. Interesting to see how the bottle develops over the next 4 days.

Re: July 2014 Purchases
Been a while since I either posted or bought anything
I´m sure lovers of good semillon will enjoy either of these:
3 * Biblia Chora Ovilos, Greece - Bit like a Cloudy Bay Te Koko, but a bend of Semillon and Assyrtiko. Quite fat with the Assytiko giving a good mineral feel.
3 * Assyrtiko Estate, Greece - 10% Barrel fermented, but you don´t notice it. Clean, pure and mineral. Needs a year to calm down a bit.
Also
1 * 2011 L´If, St emillion - From the same maker as Le Pin. but you can divide the price by at least 20..
3* 2013 Camins del Priorat, Alvar Palacious - The "basic" wine from the make of LÉrmita, made from bought in grapes. Warm, round, silky. Classy stuff and a real bargain.
NV Maqvin de Arlay, Chateau de Arlay - 1 bottle of the white and red. All roads do not read to Jura, but this is a great fortified wine. All the funk, with a bit of class.
Not bought this month, but Trudi is just back from visiting her mother in Wagga Wagga and managed to bring back
3 * Sami Odi, Baby Tui
6 * 04/05 Wendouree Muscat
3 * 08 Wendouree Cab/Malbec
1 * 06 Siraz/Malbec
Will try a Muscat and the Odi, but the rest will be put to bed for a few years yet.

I knew they made a lot, but not that much

Surely with that many made there has to be some batch variation and hence bottle variation...
