January 2014 Purchases

Post by Scotty vino »

First for the year.

4 x 2011 Rockford Rifle Range Cabs thru mail list.
Bought 1 at the cellar door recently and I thought it was worth the 40 they're asking.
My first official purchase as a member although I've bought from the CD a number of times (unofficially).
Figured If i buy here and there I might get a shot at stonewaller status eventually.
can't lose really.

Hey Scotty
Did you try the 2010 Rod & Spur as well? I was thinking of mixing up a 6 pack of that and the Rifle Range.
Btw, the other thing I have seen some people do (actually, some people includes me!) is also quote your member number when you buy at cellar door... I have no idea if that really helps speed up making it to stonewaller status but I figured it was worth a shot.

Liked the Rod and Spur but really liked the Rifle Range so I figured I'd go for them.
It wasn't until my most recent visit that I decided to join the mailing list.
To be honest I wasn't aware of the whole 'stonewall' process until I'd been to the CD 3-4 times.
A couple of years ago I was quizzed about the flag on the wall by the CD attendant and in guessing correctly was awarded a bottle of the Semillon as an impromptu prize. In hindsight I should've signed up then and there.
Probably be a stonewaller by now as I've been back a few times.
Thankfully Rockford wines bat pretty deep so I'm happy to buy other wines aside from BP on a regular basis.
If one day I get a chance to purchase BP thru the CD at non-insane prices it's a bonus.

sjw11,

I tried each of these a few days ago, each over two nights. I was very impressed with the RR. On night 1 I thought the R&S was a big miss - soft and disorganised. On night 2 it was much better and (as much as I know) I reckon you'd leave it for 4 or 5 years. The RR was great on night 1 and great on night 2. My decision was to buy more RR but not the R&S.

Bought a bottle of the2012 Jamsheed La Syrah in Melbourne which was rather enjoyable, although I have since purchased a few more to see what they'll be like in five years, I reckon it's a real sleeper.

Stopped in at Rutherglen on the way back to Canberra and picked up a bottle of 1998 Stanton & Killeen Vintage Port and two bottles of the delicious 2011 Jones Marsanne. Tasted the '08, '03, '96, '93 and '84 VPs at S&K, the '96 (which was the last straight shiraz) was superb, but for some reason (better 'expert' review in this case) I bought the '98. Jones is a lovely winery and given the strength of the Marsanne I'd like to see the reds with a bit more age and in better vintages, however I highly recommend visiting the cellar door for the fantastic food, service and atmosphere.

Finally I picked up two bottles of 2010 Fraser Gallop Parterre Cabernet Sauvignon from Costco this afternoon.

I have a strange situation where I drink more Pinot Noir, but buy more Shiraz. Therefore, I have decided that 2014 will be "the year of Pinot Noir", starting here:

3xOakridge Willowlake 2012
3xCurly Flat 2010
(plus a Vieux Telegraphe 2005 I got for Christmas)

I plan to restrict Shiraz purchases to Wendouree ('12's), Tyrrells (9 Acres '13), Collector ('13's), Marius ('12's) and Head ('13's). I wonder how I will go...

Good call on the Collector Simon. How did you come across Alex's wines? He reckons 2013 was the vintage they were praying for. :D Have you tried his Folded Blue, Pyrenees Shiraz? Completely different and beautiful. Nick O'Leary also made some from the same parcel of grapes.

Cheers, Travis.

Are we allowed to point out that Vieux Telegraphe isn't Pinot? :D Nice wine though!

I'm on a similar mission, got way too much shiraz, and hardly ever drink it. This year's purchases will be mainly focused on a few trophy bottles for special dinners, alternate varietals (mataro, temp, sang etc), more cellarable white wine and champagne.

Travis, back in the time I used to pay attention to Halliday scores, I went to buy some 2009 Marked Tree (which got 97 points). Amusingly I wasn't paying attention to my order, and I actually bought a case of 2008! I actually prefer the 2008. I have heard VERY positive things about 2013 over there too...the 2009 Reserve stands as one of my favourite wines ever...I have high hopes for '13. Not tried Folded Blue - I see Alex does have a habit of bringing wines out on the quiet...not on the website/no emails. I'll be sure to get a bottle or two.

TiggerK, you can point this out...but as I didn't buy it, I don't think it counts! I think a few of us are in a similar position - too much Shiraz. I'm also laying down more Riesling and sem...and you can never have too much Champagne (unless your name is Mike, and you live in NY).

I'm predicted Mike will give up buying all that shiraz, and start dipping his toe into the Champagne world for 2014.

4 x Crittenden Txakoli

Stopped by cellar door yesterday and grabbed a bagful of this crazy white wine that we feel in love with in Sab Sebastian last year. "You'll never recreate that feeling" says the wife.

we shall see, e shall see!~

I am at that stage. Almost filled a 48 and next size up is 108 or I move facility.

Putting it off for now and organised a BBQ to get stock down. I supply wine, others bring food.

Up at Rockford yesterday...finally.
Lovely attentive service as usual.
6 x 2010 BP, a few 2009 Moppas and a couple of 2006 cane cuts botrytis semillons...apricot sunshine in a bottle :D :D .

The BP was quite a nice wine medium bodied, but the sinewy tannin structure will ensure 10-15 in the cellar.
Was thinking of Ian ( Ticklenow) when trying the Moppa... a really nice wine, something different.
2011 will be challenging, so will be interested in the form of the BP. the 2012 cabernet was so much better than the 2011 rod and spur, sorry may have those round the wrong way. The 2011 was green and stalky...dying quickly on the palate.

Cheers
Craig.
Tomorrow will be a good day

First purchase for the year and first with the intention of real cellaring. The current cellar worthy bottles are very red heavy so made a conscious decision to go white, and to get what I consider to be some safe proven performers.

3 x 2012 Savaterre Chardonnay

3 x 2007 Tyrells Vat 1 Semillion

3 x 2009 Tyrells Vat 47 Chardonnay

3 x 2013 Grosset Polish Hill Riesling

3 x 2012 Jim Barry The Florita Riesling

Odds and sods from auction to top out the cellar.

1 bottle WYNNS COONAWARRA ESTATE John Riddoch Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 1998
1 bottle WYNNS COONAWARRA ESTATE V&A Lane Coonawarra Cabernet Shiraz 2010
1 bottle REDMAN The Redman Coonawarra Cabernet Shiraz Merlot 2003
1 bottle TAPANAPPA Whale Bone Vineyard Wrattonbully Cabernet Shiraz 2008
2 bottles LITTERINI Barossa Valley Shiraz Cabernet 2002
3 bottles MILDARA Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 1998
1 bottle SOULED OUT WINES Fulcrum Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay 2011
1 bottle ROBERT OATLEY Margaret River Chardonnay 2012
1 bottle HAY SHED HILL Margaret River Chardonnay 2011
1 bottle TAMAR RIDGE Devil's Corner Tasmania Chardonnay 2012
1 bottle BIRD IN HAND Adelaide Hills Chardonnay 2012
1 bottle GRANT BURGE Summers Adelaide Hills Eden Valley Chardonnay 2012
1 bottle YALUMBA Galway Pipe Tawny Port
1 bottle YALUMBA Galway Pipe Tawny Port

What was interesting was the Redmans Cab/shiraz/merlot. Back label says it was a special release in 2008 to celebrate Redmans 100 years. Unusual heavy glassed bottle. Anyone know anything about this wine?

Hi Carl

I saw this bottle in that mixed auction lot - it was a one-off super premium release which was sold for about $60/bottle retail, the only thing was I thought they made it from the 2002 vintage (which stuck me as unusual as it was an extremely cool year for Coonawarra). I was wondering whether they got the auction listing wrong, or I got the vintage wrong? :?:

Cheers,
Ian

Thanks Ian. It is from 2003 which was a warm vintage in SA so maybe it allowed the Coonawarra frui to ripen a little more than usual. Like 2008? Maybe one for an off line in a paper bag.
