Wife went on a tour in the Hunter - went to a number of the lesser cellar doors and didn't buy, but came back with the following little surprise for me :)

6 x 2010 Brokenwood Quail Shiraz
6 x 2012 Brokenwood Nebbiolo
3 x 2007 Brokenwood ILR Semillon

6 more Head Contrarian 2012. I had a couple with friends, and concluded I loved it, and needed more for the future. I think this is my favourite Alex Head wine (and I have had far too many!)
6xHead Riesling 2013
3xTyrrells Vat 1 2011
3xTyrrells Vat 1 2013
1xTyrrells Johnnos Sem 2013
3xGreenock Creek 2011 Cabernet
3xWoodlands Margaret 2011
4xMarius 2011 Symphony
2xMarius 2011 Simpatico

Most of the 2011's are to lay down as it was my sons birth year. I think I now have sufficient wines from this tricky vintage!

Eyeing up some more 2012 Yarra Pinots too...

I found some ordinary wines on clearance for paltry amounts and while not ones I would normally seek out I thought they were worth a punt:

2005 Fire Block Old Vine Grenache, Clare Valley - $10
2006 Penfold's Thomas Hyland Shiraz, Adelaide - $8
2006 Cumulus Climbing Chardonnay, Orange - $7
2006 Pirramimma 'Stock Hill' Chardonnay, McLaren Vale - $7
2008 Wishing Tree Unoaked Chardonnay, Western Australia - $7

I think they were trying to sell old stock but that's okay with me.

Mahmoud.

I know you liked well aged wines Mahmoud but some of those Chardonnay's might be well and truly geriatric (albeit not exactly a lot of money at risk)!! Let us know how you get on with them!

A few 1990 Wynns BL's from auction.
Levels are all base of neck, labels and capsules are in good nick and only $10 more than the price of the "failed" 2011 current release.

Gotta love market forces

Cheers Craig

Mike, a question from Craig the complete champagne novice.

I got a couple of NV Krug, but are thinking of buying a vintage edition.
I believe that 96, 98 and 2000 are available here in Australia (not 100% on that) and have also seen some 90s Clos de mensil but four figures is not my deal.
Your 1996 DP O's for $550ish here in OZ don't seem so bad...can't believe I actually just said that!

So if i was to get a bottle of vintage Krug to drink in the next 6 months or so...any suggestions?

Cheers Craig.

ps. or should I just get a Bolly RD. I have had a few over the years and just love 'em.
Tomorrow will be a good day

I've got two hit and run trips back to Sydney later this year (each time accompanied by 60+ bottles for the cellar). It'll be nice to be in t-shirts and shorts for a couple of days. Other than the tyranny of distance and the cost of living, Sydney leaves most cities for dead. Now if only there was a few more byo places, it'd be even better.....

Hi Craig,

I actually think recent releases of the Krug MV are roughly as good as the 98 and 00 Krug. These 2 vintages haven't impressed me for the price (and the 2002 is some time away from hitting the market, as they will release 2003 first). CdM is magnificent, but for the same money, give me 6 bottles of the MV or even DP or Taittinger Comtes any day.

If it was me dropping big $$ on a young champagne to drink now (even though it will get much better with age), it would be the 2002 Taittinger CdC. Or at a lesser price point, the 04 Bolly Grand Annee (or the 2002) are drinking really well now and will get better. The pinot certainly makes them a little more approachable now. I've always thought qualitatively, there wasn't much between the GA and the RD, but there's a big price difference.

Hope that is of some use.

Mike

Ditto. Add this to the
6 x 2010 Marius Matarius
6 x 2010 Marius Symposium
I bought at the end of last month.

Lucky Roger makes fantastic wine with brilliant QPR......

Plus 3 each of Noon Shiraz, Cab, Eclipse and 12 Bells

Cheers

How are you bringing your bottles back to NYC?

I was thinking of a 12 bottle styrofoam thingy with box (They sell this at Storage King). Looks like it would be ok. I think those may even fit into a suitcase although I think it'd go over weight if there were 12 bottles.

I've been looking at how to do get space on a temperature controlled container but not having a lot of luck...No one is interesting in dealing w/ the space I'd need (I don't have enough stuff probably).

Bought untried thru Langtons, but on the strength of price and some very positive Cellartracker reviews. We shall see. Separately bought a spread of '11s through another source

I use the 12 bottle styro boxes packed inside a larger box filled with packing peanuts. Never had a problem this way. To have wine professionally freighted, the carriers are looking for 30+ dozen...

2 x 2011 Seppelt Sparkling Shiraz
1 x 2012 Tascharke Girl Talk Savagnin
1 x 2013 O'Leary Walker Watervale Riesling
1 x 2013 O'Leary Walker Polish Hill River Riesling
1 x 2011 Dr Loosen Bernkasteler Lay Kabinett Riesling
1 x 2007 Tahbilk Marsanne
1 x 2011 Cape Mentelle Sauvignon Blanc Semillon
1 x 1999 Tyrrell's Vat 1 Semillon... So I obviously decided to 'take the plunge' on the '99 Vat 1 Semillon. It was difficult to evaluate colour development through the bottle, but I managed to pick one out with a pretty decent fill level. I am eager to see what all the 'aged Hunter Semillon' brouhaha is all about :D Thanks for the valuable advice in that other thread. Will keep you posted!
