TN: Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2001
TN: Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2001
Lots of talk about earlier vintages of this and I havent yet seen a note on the 01. So here is my version.
This is quite a dark wine, and was quite lifted in the decanter, it could be smelt some distance away.
The nose is sweet, VA-lifted black cherry and blackberry, some dark chocolate and crushed ant touches too. The palate is quite different to the Black Labels I've had before (of which the 98 was the last). Middle weight, savoury/black olive over some black fruit. The fruit is ripe (reflecting the season perhaps) but not overripe, the tannins are soft and fine. What sweetness there is seems to be oak rather than fruit, but its a comfortable match and neither overpowers. Initially I found the back palate a touch hot, thinking the 14.0% was a bit too much, but by the third glass the sensation had gone away.
Its in the right style groove for me and has a lot to like. $25 is fair for this,
cheers
Andrew

This stood out at the recent Divine Cabernet tasting - best QPR on the night for me.

I was quite impressed also. Good concentration and showing some slight herb characters, with a lush mouthfeel. I think I'll be getting a couple of bottles of this.
From memory this was what I was up to when I bumped into Geoff (?Jeff) G, Auswine lurker and all round nice fella. I'm sure we'll both happily admit we talked too much at the start which put us behind. We had to taste hard until the end, and were the last ones tasting, almost being shoved out the door after 9pm .
Cheers

2001 Wynns
This wine is a steal here in Canada at only $17.00. For some unknown reason it is the same price as the Shiraz and the blend. Rick

Yeah, yet another example of Southmount's exploitative attitude to it's home market, using us to subsidise it's export drive. It probably won't be long before they start ramping up the prices of the Seppelt range from Victoria. That too, after killing off a number of labels to pour the vineyard resources into the more profitable (?) "premium" Penfolds range.

DLo,
I just wanted to get my moneys worth Plus, I was so afraid of missing the chance to try the 'icon' cabernets, that I simply had to taste everything.
My wines of the night were
'01 Moss Wood
'01 Craggy Range Gimblett Gravels
'01 Grove Estate Partners Reserve
'01 Howard Park
'02 Villa Maria Reserve
'01 Devils Lair
'01 Huntington Estate Reserve (so much I just joined their mailing list)
'01 Wynns
Cheers

2001 Black Label Cab
Finally appeared on the shelves here for CAN $18.95. Very good. A little less dry on the palate than previous years I have tried, and generally easier to drink, especially at it opened up.
Almost at good as the 2001 Leconfield Cab, which is five bucks more....
