January 2013 Purchases

Post by sjw_11 »

Happy New Year Everyone! I thought I would waste no time in launching the first 2013 thread for January purchases...

Is everyone nursing credit card hang overs from the silly season or about to launch into re-stocking for all the empty spots in the cellar? (I think I am in the latter camp, but considering waiting till were past the worst of summer to order)

Anyway my first buy for the year:
3x Rockford Rifle Range 2010
3x Rockford Eden Valley Riesling 2010

Thanks Michael. It wasn't a wine I recall drinking before (any vintage) and I was overwhelmed. Reminded me a bit of a Mt Edelstone from a good vintage.

Went up to the Barossa on the weekend.

1 Torbreck "Celts" 2010 Shiraz
1 Rockfords Black Shiraz
1 Charles Melton Nine Popes 2012
1 Charles Melton Grains of Paradise Shiraz 2010

Had a fantastic lunch at Charlie's restaurant too. Fantastic food and great setting. Was even lucky enough to have Charlie wandering around helping out at the cellar door. :)

Last night I picked up:

3 - 2004 Yarra Yering Dry Red N°1

2 - 2009 Château Sénéjac

and a partridge... no sorry, and

1 - 2009 W. Gisselbrecht Riesling Schiefferberg

Couldn't believe I bumped into some of the '04 Dry Red. I was going to buy just the single bottle, but then realised that a Pommy mate of mine will be over later in the year to watch The Ashes, and he may need some "sweet liquor to ease the pain". Or maybe I will.

Cheers, Travis.

12 x 2009 Tahbilk Cabernet Franc
12 x 2010 Tahbilk Roussanne

hard to pass up at ~$10/b. I have never tried the roussanne, but the cab franc is delicious.

I don't think I've tasted the Roussanne 2010 but from previous vintages it's perhaps my favourite white varietal from Tahbilk in good vintages. The cab franc may be the sleeper in the CD red range but it does have a fair number of followers. The roussanne is the white sleeper IMO. I've been "talking up" this wine since I first tried it some years ago. Allan (The Waiters Friend) recently made some positive comments about it and he's fairly particular about white wines - the Madfish Riesling I took to an offline dinner with him and his then partner was gifted to the staff of Brents.

Agree with the Cab Franc. Great value even at its normal price.

Welcome back Monghead. Its been a while. Are you back in Oz for good?

I wandered into that sale the other day, and very nearly bought the 98 Coleraine, however the 6 bottle minimum put me off. Judguing by your tasting note though, perhaps i should have plunged.

One of my fave cellar doors. I like the 'sitting round the table' idea to taste. It tends to create a relaxed vibe.
For me, it flies in the face of the whole mailing list gig. To be able to go and actually sit and taste and strike up a
few conversations and take the atmos in. What it's all about IMO. And if you you're lucky enough to have the wine maker there it just adds to the experience. Although it is exciting to receive the mailing list goodies. Nothing beats getting in amongst it.
Oh yeah....purchases
1 2006 Leo Buring eden valley riesling ( to replace the one i just consumed, awesome btw)
1 2012 Kalleske Clarry's GSM. Yet to try but the 2011 gets a gong at No.6 in the SA top 100.
There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot.

Thanks Michael. Yes, back on home soil now. We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay in the US of A, but it is great to be back. Tell u what though, wine is CHEAP there! Was drinking Felton Road Pinots as the quaffer for 30-35 per bottle...

As to the Coleraine, yes, it was a good bottle, and I think I'll be looking for more on the w/e.

Thought you were joking at first about Maipenrai, but it really is a vineyard with some history

"mai pen rai" is Thai for roughly "no worries" or "never mind"

Couple of bottles of 08 Ch Leoville Barton. A bit of a bruiser of a wine from all accounts but will throw them in the cellar for a decade and see if time can take care of any lack of charm it no doubt suffers from at the moment. At the end of the day it was 2nd growth bdx for the same price as a coleraine so will chance my arm

Mixed case of Pooley wines; mostly pinot & riesling, with a couple of cab-m blends too.
Pooley is a name to watch; they're wines will be getting better & better.

Eventually they're intending to make a shiraz again; their grapes made up a third of the Watson-winning Glaetzer wine the other year. They'll be no chardonnay though; given what TWE pay for their Yattarna-destined grapes now, they'd be losing money by bottling it themselves and trying to sell it.
