Is There Really A Taste Difference Between Cheap and Expensive Wines?

It got me thinking when a Tahbilk wine got similar scores to much more expensive wine in a recent off-line reported on here recently.

Whilst true that taste is not an exact science, I think pricing is also not an exact science. The regular Tahbilk Cab Sauvs have been outstanding QPR for about as long as Tahbilk has been in existence.... as good as many other wineries' premium offerings. The 1986 was one of the more memorable wines of the past 12 months and for some the WOTN in Nov last year.

IMHO many a $100 wine I have tried has been infinitely better than any $2 or $10-chuck ... but twice as good as a superior $50 wine? 5x as good as the best of the $20 brigade of wines that over-deliver for price? Hmm.... then again there is a label show-off value to account for...

I have two cases of the 2010 Mike Press Shiraz - great stuff for drinking now and for the next couple of years.

I have a carton of the 2010 MP shiraz, but I prefer the Cab (2008.) Mike agrees. He told me that CS is the star of the vineyard.

I guess I'm lucky that Halliday turned me onto MPW early in my wine buying life and set the bar (QPR) for me. I am eternally grateful to JH and MP!
