Thanks to everyone who has replied. I will be going shopping tomorrow for some of this stuff.

However, if in doubt, would you say it is pretty safe to go with any Shiraz from the Barossa from the 04 vintage? Are there safer bets?

Top value picks

Hi Guys, I have been MIA for a while due to new job and new baby but I have had to return as my wine stocks are diminishing rapidly. The budget is still tight so am after your latest top value wines (preferably under $20.00). I have still got some Majella Musicians and Heartlands and thought these w...

I'm not generally an avid viewer or supporter of soccer but I thought it was a terrific night of entertainment. Unlike Davo, I think the low scoring added to the viewing. It forced me to be on the edge of my seat all night. In other, high scoring sports, you often know the result well before the end...

I voted for beer.

I will still indulge in some nice red over summer but will more often turn to a cold beer at a bbq lunch or dinner. I will also enjoy a nice reisling or sauvignon blanc too. So probably a mixed bag of alcohol consumption.

Cheers,
Andrew

I tried the unique 2001 "Shiraz Pressings" from Ivanhoe a couple of years back. From memory, it was quite drinkable even as a new wine and was supposed to cellar well.

Peter Lehmann 'The Barossa' Shiraz 2002

I opened a bottle of Peter Lehmann 'The Barossa' Shiraz 2002 last night. My tasting note writing skills are not quite developed so I won't even try here. However, I must say that this relative cheapie was excellent. The best way I can describe it is that it was extremely smooth and balanced with no ...

Thanks hypnotoad for posting this question. I think this is exactly what I need to know as an apprentice wino with a limited budget. I often see rating of "quaffers" as high as expensive wines but assumed that this rating may have included some value component. However, maybe this is not the case. C...

Let me say that I currently tend to purchase somewhere between $15 and $20 wines and am msotly drinking them myself with dinner or occasionally with friends - my wife is pregnant so is off the booze. I can't get a part-time job as I am a stay-at-home dad this year while my wife works and I complete ...

Sell the kids and convince the wife to go on the game Then you can afford more of the good stuff. Unfortunately, it is the wife who is contributing all income to the house at the moment. I quit my job and went back to uni to become a school teacher (different debate right there). Therefore, she is ...

$200/mth wine budget - Your opinion?

I realise from previous posts that true winos don't put such restraints on themselves. However, operating under a fairly strict budget, I thought I'd get your opinions on this one. If you had $200.00/mth to spend on wine, how would you best spend it. The basic tradeoff is quantity vs quality. Do you...

3 x Majella The Musician 2004 6 x Heartland Shiraz 2004 Another one which is around $17-20 that you should look out for, although hard to find now, is the 2004 Kalleske Clarry's Red. Beautiful Grenache/Shiraz blend, also screwcapped. The 2005 will be out early next year so maybe wait until this one...

Well I didn't get much response from this one so I did some deeper research and have purchased some "drink now" wines for under $20.00. I got: 3 x Mr Riggs The Gaffer Shiraz 2004 3 x Majella The Musician 2004 6 x Heartland Shiraz 2004 I know these are generally quaffers for most of you but I don't g...

totally unrealistic as a true wino would not put these kind of limitations on him/herself. Obviously, I am only an apprentice wino as yet. Give me a few years and I will graduate. I have editted the original post by adding that you would be buying a 6 pack of each wine not single bottles. Sorry for...

Hypothetical...

Ok, here is the situation. Your entire wine collection has been destroyed due to some sort of natural disaster. You weren't insured and so will have to start from scratch. 1. What are the first two wines that you buy to kick start your new cellar? (6 pack of each) 2. What are the first two wines you...

1570 or 1824 with around 2 -15 % TCA affected depending on who you ask or did these get burnt in some pagan ritual As much as I'd like to stretch this out to 4 pages or more, I've left you stew long enough already, the winner was at the bottom of the first page, 1570 is the magic number. I'll go 1624. Cheers, grasshopper 2nd guess - 1570. Thanks! Oops, just realised that my second guess was already used. Oh well, many thanks to Red Bigot for this thread - a terrific gesture of generosity. I was looking forward to adding a wine to my collection that was earlier than 1998 (sad I know...

Thanks everyone for your advice. The home I am in is brick veneer but is relatively cool due to a large pergola that blocks the westerly sun from hitting any windows. I currently have my wine stored in the back of a cabinet. The cabinet actually has two compartments - front and back, divided by a hi...

Best way to store wines when you don't have a cellar?

Hello All, I have stumbled across these forums recently and have enjoyed reading some expert commentary. I am a relative novice in all things wine but would like to develop my expertise (and my collection) over the next few years. My first question then is in regards to storing my wines. I live on a...
