a tasting for a couple of Canadian blow-ins

1999 Balnaves Coonawarra Cab Sav - very nice, classic 'warra' nose and great balance taste. Vgood 1999 Alkoomi Frankland Riesling - too far gone. It's definetely lost that lovin' feelin. Vpoor 1998 Mount Pleasant HV Semillon - just hanging in there, starting to get a bit too' developed for me. Like ...

I'd like to see 500ml as well, although how would Dicko and Hinch go if that happened. At 3 and 4 bottles a day respectively, that would translate to 4.5 and 6 empties a day! Maybe an extra trip to the wheelie bin for the poor sods (or should I say soaks!!!)

Gavin,

You just explained the problem. I too have trouble tasting when blind, (wasted, splattered, whatever). I'll scull a 750 of vodka and try it again!

The case arrived at the office today, so I thought I'd open the box of XL5's and let the guys at work taste it as well. Quite a pleasing smell, pleasant enough palate, but certainly nothing like some of descriptions I've read about it. the blurb on the auswine site is: "Deep dark black and red....

That'll bring out the peenoo elitists for sure

A big call Adair. 94 pts for a mudgee Peenoo. Watch out for the peenoo dogs of war as they will be let lose on you soon. I've bought the odd bottle of thistle Hill peenoo over the years & don't mind the style. I've even enjoyed the odd Pfeiffer peenoo over the years, but I'm reluctant to go publ...

Winter Creek shiraz 2004

I bought a six pack of this on the back of a few positive reviews here and there. Generally, I try not to do this, but the news coming in about the 04' barossa vintage and said reviews, I took a punt. 1st bottled opened about a month ago was not what I expected. Heaps of alcohol poured from the glas...

I agree, the wines at Grayln are very good indeed, but $90 each!! I can think of better ways to spend my hard earned. parb, Value is a relative thing. Is a top end BMW at $200K five times better than a Holden Commode at $40,000? Nope, there is a law of diminishing returns when it comes to quality. ...

I noticed in the Diary, no mention of the 3m high homage to RPJnr & and his bestowment of greatness on the Gralyn wines, or is it no longer on display in the tasting room. I agree, the wines at Grayln are very good indeed, but $90 each!! I can think of better ways to spend my hard earned. But cr...

Bowen Estate Shiraz 2001- heaps of bottle stink, that blew off after 30mins. May have been a little oxidised, with that 'sherry' like taste underneath it. Just not as good as I thought It should be Wynns black Label Cab 2001 - very nice Penfolds Bin389 1997 - drinking very well, should have decanted...

They don't look too bad a concept, although is that a regular aircon bolted to/in the wall of it. If so, I'd be wary of the noise of the thing (if in the house). I still think the Kitchener units (250-$12/b & 410-$11.5/b bottle) are pretty good for new buys. For me, I'll keep going with the conv...

Best sub$25 is Seppelt 03 Chalambar, lots of daylight to second. Special mention to Hardys 04 Oomoo, excellent @$11.

Best >$25, can't think of any (assuming that full bottle consumption is a pre-requisite), unless the Seppelt 94' sparklung Shiraz counts

Give Marsh Estate a go. They make 3 shiraz, Private bin(best oak, lush, rich etc) and Vat R & Vat S (lighter thab PB, but can also be good). The Vat N Cab Sav can also be good. The whites are also good esp. the semillon(s) & the the Spkl White(100% charddie). I reckon their VP (when made) is...
