Re: Right, what are we/you drinking now .. tonight
2008 St Hugo Cabernet Sauvignon Coonawarra Last of three bottles, and the best (of course). This is still a bit of beast, a big, rich, concentrated wine with a very dark colour, and a nice, classic nose of black fruits, mint and herbs. Full bodied on the palate, with a bit of cedar as well and the s...

I remember hitting Caro's and Glengarry in the downtown area and First Glass on the North Shore.

Re: Right, what are we/you drinking now .. tonight
I've been drinking a few Aussie wines recently, with one NZ wine in the list as well. 2017 Chapel Hill Grenache Bush Vine - Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale (2022-12-18) I really enjoyed this wine. In the nose and medium bodied palate, there was a mix of red fruits, licorice and a ...

1998 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon - Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra (2022-11-12) I was expecting to see signs of age in the colour, nose and palate: no to all three. Still dark in colour with little bricking, with blackfruits and hints of tar, caramel and mint ...

2012 Turkey Flat Shiraz - Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley (2022-11-08) Still fairly dark in colour. The nose leans on the savory side, a good sign to me. There are redfruits (cherry, plum) but also earthy notes and olives. Similar flavours and impression on the medium bodied pal...

1997 Tyrells Semillon Vat 1 Hazy notes from a couple days ago. Light gold/yellow in colour. The nose and palate was a little one note, but what a note it was! The palate was medium bodied but incredibly intense lemon preserve, the deepest, most flavourful lemon flavour I've ever tasted in a wine. Qu...

2004 St Hugo Cabernet Sauvignon Coonawarra [/url] - Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra (2022-09-14) Still dark in colour, just a touch of bricking around the edges. Classic blackfruits and a slight herbal note on nose. Medium bodied, with again classic cab and Coonawarra on the...

Is Chenin Blanc, especially from the Loire, the world's most underrated and ignored wine? I'd raise my hand to that question. Many thanks for the notes, sounds like a great tasting.

That's what I'm hopping for, cuttlefish! Of course, it could also be related to damage during transport, or was a root day, or [insert other possibilities here]. But I'll give my remaining bottles a few years in the cellar and hope it was just not ready for prime time yet.

Katnook Sale and Katnook Cabernet 2001 note
I opened this wine last night in 'honour' of the sale of Katnook to Accolade. It seems Katnook will go the way of wineries like Leasingham, with its vineyards providing premium grapes for other Accolade brands. Sad to see another winery be engulfed like this. Re: China targets Australian wine industry
All correct above, but it became a Canada-wide issue, given the recent partial agreement. Wine sales in grocery stores are a mere drop in the bucket here in BC (less than 1% of all sales), and I think less than 10 grocery stores decided to sell wine. There was also a foreign and local sales option, ...

Here in Canada, China has also been busy. After the arrest in 2018 of Meng Wanzhou, a company executive and the daughter of Huawei's founder (the Americans requested this via a legal agreement between Canada and the US), there have been four Canadians in China given the death sentence. Two additiona...

I saw that Bill Nanson (Burgundy Report) article too. It's interesting that in Oz and NZ, the screwcap rather quickly became the 'alternative' closure of choice, but in the Old World, they were much more resistant to change and are slowly moving to the Diam (developed later than the screwcap), seemi...

As someone who has seen the rise and fall of the Aussie phenomenon I think I can say the Yellow Tail and Little Penguin are not to blame. They were but the cheap end of the Aussie wine phenomenon. They joined the ranks of Gallo from the US, generic $10 Bordeaux, Mateus from Portugal, and Blue Nun a...

Here's my 2 cents from British Columbia, Canada. It's a very different market than the US, certainly, but similar in some ways (three tier system). As others have mentioned, all producers have to deal with this, so I agree it's not an issue at all. Small producers can have problems with all the pape...

A real classic and such a great QPR. The switch to the screwcap makes such a huge difference in several ways, but particularly allowing it to age at an even slower pace. This can have both positive and negative implications, but to me it is a positive thing for this wine. I drank with two other non-...
