Re: Advice please on a disappointment.

May I interpose a question but what would you (collectively) feel is too high a temperature? My brother lives in Cairns and is always moaning about the temps being too high to keep wine. I believe him but I was wondering what a subjective tipping point might be. The temperature and length of time i...

You gave up? Good for you. Too many wineries. Too many wines. Cheers Michael[/quote] Exactly right. I was on Stonewaller's list but quit after so many inconsistent vintages of BP. For the money there so many similar wines out there even better ones. Never understood why they are trying to create suc...

Re: Broken Glassware Dilemma

however, I'll probably never convince myself that wine tastes better out of Zalto/Riedel. I've done a nimver of side bu side comparisons and the to me the difference on the nose is as stark as day and night. Granted the Zalto Universal has a tendency to highlight faults and alcohol on the nose, but...

Re: The 'What's your thoughts on this wine' Thread

I came a cross a Kalleske Old Vine and I think it was a grenache, I'll go back and have a look and I don't know the vintage. It's the grenache 2015. Thoughts? We've only tried two other Kalleske's before (a GSM and shiraz) and neither stood out. The GSM had an odd nose to it. Kalleske Old Vine Gren...

I regret buying all those big Barossa Shiraz, Greenock creek, Two Hands, Kealske and Rolf Binder. All went to auction a few years ago. Cheers Con. I suppose you meant Kalleske. All of Kalleske wines have great structure with proper back bone to support the fruit. They never ever add acid into their...

Settlement Wine Company in McLaren Vale used to do an amazing Cab Franc that aged very well... I think the fruit was from Langhorne Creek if I recall correctly. Re: Screw caps

I am still amazed the debate rages about leaky corks being a requirement for wines to age. The French have been running testing on this for centuries on white wine and in Australia for over 100 years on reds. It is called sparkling wine. It is under pressure and nothing is getting in there unless t...

If it is not gonna take you more than a few hours to drink it, a well insulated bottle holder does wonders.
I have been using the one in the pictures with great success. Where do you get it? have no idea, it came with the shopping wheelie my Missus bought some years ago.

Re: Screw caps

It's not just a question of whether it should, it's a question of how much it flavours a given wine. Doesn't matter if it's intentional or not, some people like those flavours. I am not saying corks should be used just to give that flavour, I'm just saying it's another aspect of the cork vs SC deba...

Re: Screw caps

I agree with you on the cork flavours playing a part in aged characteristics. Older barrels can be used if you want to add less or even no oak flavours whilst still being about the micro-ox and having an influence on tannins. Then again, you can still add tannins just on its own. Some well known wi...

yeah but u guys are missing a curial point that is Oak is specifically/deliberately used to impart flavours to wine whereas cork is just a closure and is used only to stop (or one can argue to minimize) O2 ingress while wine is aging. That's true..but I'm pretty convinced a lot of the "aged&qu...

I've got no problem with the price. Wouldn't be surprised to see it hit $1,000 in future years. Grange is viewed as the best icon wine in Australia.
