Re: Standish

Maybe so Ozzie, but not my cup of tea. Wines that hit 15% alcohol and above are off limits for me, unless they are vermouth, amarone, or something else. A wine that hits the 15% mark usually gets put back on the shelf. I have done it a number of times, especially with Aussie shiraz and GSMs. One ti...

Re: What unpopular (wine) opinions do you have?

In the right moment, a chilled rose can be absolutely sublime. AGREE, but not Aussie Rose. AGREE, except for Aussie Rosé made from Nebbiolo where I DISAGREE. It's a completely different beast to the usual Aussie stuff. They're very dry and savoury with lots of complexity and no "lolly water&qu...

Re: What wines wont you buy?

I don't think I have ever bought a Penfolds wine for my own consumption, well made wines but not great value for money these days (I missed the halycon days of $20 something 389), and just don't seem to have enough character to me Pretty much avoid the supermarket wineries , very rarely buy save bla...

Re: It finally happened - Rockford Stone Waller

but I don't need to be ordering several years worth of wines I don't really want in order to get future access to the ones I do Not really feasible for many people especially someone like me who buys minimal SA Shiraz these days If you don't like Rockford's other wines and you don't like SA Shiraz,...

Re: It finally happened - Rockford Stone Waller

Unless you're a Rockford tragic, wouldn't it be easier to just pick up the exclusive wines on the secondary market - they seem to be readily available. Interesting Diddy, I see at Wickham's 2015 BP at $126 with a guide of $140+ so the October Stonewaller flippers are hoping to double their $69 a bo...

Re: It finally happened - Rockford Stone Waller

Ok ,yes its very easy to get on the list per se, but to get access to Stonewaller wines you have order right across the range good years bad years and all and still, as OP alluded to, wait several years to get access to those wines. I understand fully that for many this isn't too much of an impositi...

Re: If you were starting your cellar again...

I would have started earlier on Chardonnays for sure, would have avoided the "cellar clubs" from wineries and places like vinomofo, and wine selectors and spent the same money trying different wines. Other than that happy with where I am at, although cellar is still in primary school at 65...

Re: It finally happened - Rockford Stone Waller

This is a winery I have given up on really. I love their Cabernet but am over the hoops that one has to jump through to simply go on the list then to access Basket press etc i have to keep ordering for years, forget it especially when as you said I can get access to the wines through friends. Stunni...

Re: Unicorn wines of the future..

Great post this, have just had a great half hours reading, couple of my thoughts Some of the early Sami Odi wines are already unicorns, and I think will continue to be so, also several of the 2014 single site Hunter wines such as 4 acres, 1965 Vines Rosehill, etc will certainly be in contention. Al...

Re: Sept Sydney Offline: Margaret River vs. Coonawarra

I've got a few options to fit the theme but all are pure vinfanticide to open (e.g Riddoch 04 - still crazy young), so I've arranged to buy a couple of Dave's wines from the list in his previous post. So put me down for the Howard Park Cab Merlot 96 and one of those Coonawarras. (Pyrus 88 would be ...

Re: Top favourite red styles

While my cellar is quite shiraz heavy, they are very different styles of Shiraz, from Hunter to Barossa styles, which really are very different wines regardless of what grape they come from. Went with Cab Sav as second although have growing love for Pinot and Nebbiolo and a slight perversion for Bru...
