Re: TN: Qantas Business class - lucky dip time

I travelled QF international business regularly between 2005 to 2009. Back then it was not uncommon to find a RWT, St Henri or Clonakilla SV in business class. It started going downhill noticeable around 2010? to now when business class means a $25 red.

Was at Magill Estate last week for a tasting which included the 802 superblend. It was unfiltered, full of sediment and ho hum. $850 too.

Tend to disagree. Had a 2011 Cab merlot last weekend and found it sensational. Punching up with the MR heavy hitters Moss Wood and Woodlands.

Re: Howard Park Porongorup Riesling tasting 2019-2010. 10 March 2021

Thanks Allan
As always I enjoy reading your groups’ tasting notes. I don’t mind the HP rieslings although in past couple of years have moved my purchases to Dukes who put out two riesling labels more to my palate.

Interesting the variation just amongst the Porongurup riesling producers.

Re: Wine cellar advice

Hi all. I live in Melbourne and I have a small cellar that I made under my house. I have waterproofed the walls and did some insulation on walls and partial ceiling. Holds temperature at 19-20deg. Daily variance is at most 1 deg. Hot days might go up to 21deg. Unsure what the temperature will be du...

Re: Howard Park “Abercrombie” Cabernet Sauvignon vertical tasting

Thanks Allan Very informative notes as always. I have been a fan of Howard Park and always enjoy visiting their MR and Denmark cellar door although Denmark is no longer. I have magnums of the 03/04 and 07 Abercrombie plus singles of the 08/12. Last year I (we) consumed a 02 magnum and to be honest f...

Re: July 2020 Purchases

Woodlands cabernet is the best in MR IMHO. And I love my MR cabernets! I am on your team. Just finished a 2016 Cab Merlot and it really was the goods. I will be loading up on the 2018's when they appear. Question: is the 'Emily' a major step up from their regular Cab Franc version? Because the regu...

Re: July 2020 Purchases

Rocky what did you think of the Woodlands lineup? Hacker, I have been buying from Woodlands annually for past 10 years. Arguably the best winery and producer in Margaret River IMO. Their flagship CS, Margaret and Chardonnay are faultless. They now have a nice seating tasting arrangement and option ...

Re: July 2020 Purchases

Back from the first Margaret River trip for the year. Fantastic trip, often cellar doors were very quiet so ended up with long private tastings before another visitor walked in. Some stunning Chardonnays including the LEAS, Vasse Heytesbury and Cullen Kevin John. Vasse Felix Margaret River Chardonna...

Would have to be the Pennies Special Bin 111A Shiraz 2016. Be quick as it won’t last long at $1,500 bottle.

I have 10 year vertical of Woodland Flagship CS magnums. Really proud of them but almost at the point of what am I going to do with them? Almost bordering on sentimental value.

Any ideas?

My gripe is not with the bidding but the fact that probably 50% of my purchases are heat damaged. Annoying to think that there must be a % of people knowingly dumping high probability heat tainted bottles onto the secondary market.

Thanks for the MR trip report, very much enjoyed it and I think you captured it well. Living in Perth I regularly do short trips throughout the region and I guess I have got use to the ‘high’ prices, however as you mentioned there are many reasonable price points for decent wines.

Been buying the Moss wood CS for past 10 years. Advise is not to touch them until 10-15 years age minimum.
