Re: Are restaurant portions getting smaller?
On the subject of Masterchef - I thought the episode featuring the 'Jaffles' or toasties was great. Most of the audience could aspire to knocking up something like that as opposed to the quail dish a few nights before. I too find there to be a gulf between the serving sizes at 'fine dining' restaura...

Re: Right, what are we/you drinking now .. tonight
Tried a Morris Rutherglen Dutif (2010) last night after a recommendation from someone on here. Wow. Mouth drying tannins masked everything for me. Absolutely massive. My wife who likes a 'slurpable' smooth wine asked if 'there was something wrong with it'. Said she much preferred the previous nights...

Rhubarb Rhubarb at Woolowin does Byo for reasonable corkage if you're on the Northside. Great food - never had anything but top notch food there. I'm particularly fond of their eye fillet - the do it in clarified butter. It truly melts in your mouth.

Re: What's the plan for Xmas wine and food for 2015?
The highlight of my day food wise was a tiger prawn and avocado sandwich (made with fresh bread lots of black pepper and a few coriander leaves) at about sundown yesterday. Washed it down with a Four Pines Ale. Was perched on a verandah about 80 yards from the surf just north of Noosa. That there is...

Re: Coonawarra 2014 Taste Test
That is an interesting observation and I've got to agree with the Tuesner and Metala. I reckon the Gemtree Uncut usually gives an indication of the McLaren Vale vintage (from my limited experience anyway). I haven't had enough Coonawarra shiraz to have an educated opinion. The Coonawarra shiraz's I'...

Or he has not moved on from the 70s when some winery IIRC made such as beast. Used to rival Brandivino I think. Cheers Craig Nah, no comparison... Brandivino was for getting pissed. Black Tower was for sophisticated types and hot dates. This thread brings back memories. Do they still make Green Gin...

2010 lakes breeze bernoota cab/shiraz This is what a solid cab/shiraz should be. At the price point this is a stunning wine. Deep, dark and brooding. Nose of chocolate, earth and crushed ants. Slight mint/eucalypt. Bit of acid on the finish, hopefully that will fade with time. Only have 2 left whic...

Re: Right, what are we/you drinking now .. tonight
Help needed here please. I tried a 2008 Saltram Mamre Brook Shiraz on Saturday night. First 2008 of this wine I've tried. I usually love this wine - particularly the 2006 and 2010 vintages. I found the 2008 to be big and robust but I could taste 'heat' if that makes sense? Could it be that it hasn't...

Re: Sparkling Red recommendations?
So I tried the Bleasdale Sparkling Shiraz last night. I thought I'd start there as I'm yet to have a Langhorne Creek red that I don't like.
It was too sweet for my taste though. Funny how I say that now - I managed to finish the bottle.
I will try the Seppelt next. May not be as sweet.

Some great suggestions - thanks. I'm a fan of Majella generally so I'll give that one a go along with the Seppelt. Sparkling Red recommendations?
I have grown to love my big reds but still don't have a great fondness for traditional sparkling (white) wine. To be fair I've never really tried anything terrific. I'm keen to venture into the sparkling shiraz territory but I don't want the experiment to tarnish my opinion of the whole sparkling re...

Hi Michael
I've tried the Shotfire and quite liked it. Another one at a similar price point that I head toward is D'Arenberg Footbolt. Both the 2010 and 2012 are great in my opinion.

Last night. 2012 Tuesner Reibke Shiraz Poured an hour prior to drinking. Floral fragrance. Medium to full bodied. Dark blackberry fruit with some savoury notes. Fine tannins. Decent length. Great value for money in my opinion. Is this type of quaffer Shiraz likely to get better over time? Or is it a...

I loved D'Arenberg at McLaren Vale and Yalumba at the Barossa.
Both were happy to spend a bit of time with wine novices and both (particularly Yalumba) had some cracking wine to taste.

Right up my alley - the Cab and Shiraz blends are my favourite reds. I find they have an extra dimension. You could try a Lake Breeze Bernoota Shiraz Cab from Langhorne Creek. Olivers Taranga do a good Shiraz Cab called Corrina's from memory. Wolf Blass have a Cab/Shiraz blend. Henschke Keyneton is ...

This is right up my alley. 2012 Metala cab/shiraz - can't get much better value at $13. Stoneyfell cab/shiraz is similar at about the same price. 2012 Yalumba Signature is quality at $37 and should be fantastic in 10 years. 2012 Wynns Black Label is a bargain at $25. Sounds like there will be plenty of wine on the night. If we're doing the 'musical chairs' thing I pitty the person that gets to 'talk' with me at the end of the night. Said person will have to be fluent in gibberish.

Had a glass of Langmeil 'Ressurection' Mataro (2010). I can't describe it in wine speak but it smelled like toilet air freshener that would be called 'garden fresh' and tasted like what I would imagine water from our of a vase of flowers would taste like. The smell and taste of flowers was way overp...

Hi all In my continuing wine journey I've gravitated to a few 'go to' wines. The planned Brisbane offline has made me ponder what the next step up in class would be for a few of my favourites?
