First, can you put a different spin on it? Rather than referring to it as a habit, could it be referred to as a hobby? Does she have a hobby or anything that she spends a decent amount of money on e.g. shoes or nice clothes? A bit of a stereotype but you might be able to find something that works. ...

I've had a read of this thread - http://forum.auswine.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=10717. There's some excellent info there! But I thought there might be some more recent information, or info that is a bit more specific to this question

Rhone Valley - where to stay...

Heading to Europe in June. With about 2 weeks in France, the rough plan is to start in Paris, spend a couple of nights in Lyon, a couple of nights in Rhone Valley, a few nights in Nice / French Rivera, and then find our way in to Germany. Rhone Valley travel info seems to be a bit hard to come by, s...

Scotty vino, thanks for starting this thread. I had seen a couple of ads around town, but had forgotten all about it. I made it along yesterday. It was a fun and well organised event. 2010 Main Divide Pinot Noir. Clear, medium red. Vegemite was the first smell. Then mushrooms, and an array of subjective tasting notes e.g. wet dirt under a very wet log (covered in moss, haha), and a dusty shop. Then sourdough and a bit of meat pie. A hint of red fruit struggling for attention. To...

2010 Scarpantoni Block 3 Shiraz. McLaren Vale. Very dark black-purple. A beautifully perfumed nose with jammy blackberries and dark fruit, mocha, and, unless I'm imagining things, crayons. The oak has kept in check very nicely. The palate is super smooth with a great finish. Excellent value. I reall...

Restaurants and faulted wine

Just got home from dinner at a restaurant. I ordered a glass of a McLaren Vale Sangiovese-based blend (Primo Estate Il Briccone). The wine came out and I thought it was affected. There was a strong scent of balsamic vinegar coming from the glass. My partner had a sniff and confirmed the aroma. It st...

It sounds like the you and I are working on a similar project I reckon it's worth trying to pair the wine with a well matched meal. Re: McLaren Vale - cellar door recommendations

We made it out to the McLaren Vale. It is bemusing to note that I somehow ended up as the designated driver. That's fine though, the primary motivation behind today's trip was to persuade two other craft beer and whisky lovers to enjoy a bit of wine. The first stop was Coriole. I thought they were c...

Castellare di Castellina Chianti Classico 2010. Clear, medium intensity red with a strawberry colour at the edges. Earthy aromas readily apparent, like dust and bricks, very nostalgic, with cherry cola and plums just beneath the surface. The palate is all about cherry cola and cherry ripe. Fine tan...

Thank you for all of your input. Samuel's Gorge looks nice. McLaren Vale - cellar door recommendations

We're planning a day trip to McLaren Vale in January. With little experience in that area, I'm keen to hear your recommendations. We will aim to visit 4 or 5 places, and try to stick with those that have a cellar door, rather than by appointment visits. And I will be keeping an eye out for Grenache!...

That looks like an awesome list! To the best of my knowledge, Head, Standish, Ballycroft, Flaxman, David Franz and Kalleske do not have a cellar door (Kalleske were in the process of building one when I visited a few months ago). However, tasting by appointment is of course a different matter. The B...
