Re: Coonawarra notes - 2024

Great to hear you enjoyed your time in Coonawarra, [flak jacket on] I still think its the premier wine region in Australia. I've been going there for over 50 years and I'm happy to admit to being a rusted on Coonawarra-phile. Lots of things have changed in that time, as they have in other areas, but...

Re: Vale Mychurch - Our great friend, Cameron

Yes, terrible news. Although having been at various Melbourne tasting groups over the last twenty years, I am not sure that I met Cameron, and clearly that would not have happened in the last four years since moving back to Adelaide, but I appreciated the posts and could imagine the camaraderie. No ...

Re: So…how do you approach decanting?

This topic was done to death on a FB group recently, which seemed to have posts every second day along the lines of "what would you recommend in terms of decanting this wine blah blah" For me there are no hard and fast rules, but I think some guidelines are reasonable. I tend to drink olde...

Know exactly what you mean, given a whole lot of bottles opened here over the last couple of weeks, great stuff, that's what wine enjoyment is about

90A is the best wine I've had but I'm limited mostly to OZ wines The 90A was by far the best drinking wine last weekend at 34 years of age. Pretty sure the 04 B42 and 60A will be even better with time, and they do need a little more time to get into that maximum pleasure mode. After all, they are o...

Re: TN: from the crypt...!

What I love about these sorts of tasting is that you are drinking wine history. Really enjoyable. I’m ok tasting younger wines just to see what they promise, but enjoyment for me is something with a bit of age. For example, had a dinner in Coonawarra a few weeks ago with all reds about twenty years ...

Re: TN: from the crypt...!

N4sir, a frequent contributor (with an awesome Avatar) many years ago, used to organise a similar tasting around Halloween each year in Adelaide. It was aptly named "Bring Out Your Dead (or something like that). I've always wondered where he got to. I do hope he's OK. His wine knowledge was ex...

Craig, Well, I guess I didn’t think too much about how much it would cost to dawdle down to Dans (looking forward to the new Malvern shop by the way) and purchase these wines now! The ‘04’s were about $400 when I splurged on a few of them, maybe 12/13 years ago. Fortunately still have one 60A, a cou...

Second last tasting in the Festival of Birthday, or "FestiMal". Some oldies from the cellar. All looked good, Grange and 707 were exceptional, Bin128 was surprisingly good, I threw in the Seaview as a bit of a curio, but it was still holding up. The St Henri wasn't the best bottle I've ha...

Ok, last event in the FestiMal of Birthday, some exceptional cabernet based wines from the cellar, saving the best till last, some Penfolds special bins bookended by Wynns JR. Just extraordinary, the wines kept getting better and better as the tasting went on, certainly a tasting to be remembered 20...

Re: Lindemans and Wolf Blass sail off into the sunset

Absolute cluster**** imo. There's something more sinister about all of this, and it's the decline of the range of really excellent diverse wine offerings in Australia. How the f*** can one get excited about Squealing Pig and 19Crimes as leaders in the Australian wine industry? WTF are they thinking?...

Selected cellar doors through memberships, not surprisingly for me Wynns, Balnaves, Redman, but also Bekkers Cellar door mailing lists - Standish, Rockford, Bowen Estate, Majella, Katnook (although usually beaten by Accolade), Treasury and Accolade on line D'Or to Door (mainly old world), The Other ...

Quite a few excellent reds at a dinner in Coonawarra last night, mostly 20yo cabernet, but a couple of other years as well. The 2004 Parker, Wynns JR, Katnook Odyssey, Balnaves Tally were all outstanding, just a pleasure to drink 20 yo wines that were ageing gracefully, with good structure and balan...
