Hi All.

Sorry for the lapse in communications, I am still here and still touring the Australian countryside.
I am off to Rutherglen tomorrow, so am again fishing for ideas on good places to visit winerywise.

Full report to follow.

Mike.

Winter wine trip

Hi All. I am making another trip to Melbourne from the UK, I get in on Monday. I have never been to Australia in the Winter and am a wondering if there are the same range of wine-related activities available this time of year. Do the cellar doors remain open? Can one still do winery tours? I will be...

The Mussar '99 (second left) we drank at Christmas was a let down, thoroughly corked.

I tried the Stonier '06 sauvignon blanc at the callar door earlier this year, it is excellent. One comment I would make is that the temperature of serving has a profound effect on my enjoyment of sauvignon blanc, probably more than any white wine. The most memorable sauvignon blanc I ever drank was ...

Pangea 2004

Has anyone managed to get hold of the Pangea 2004 vintage, the Chilean Syrah/Cabernet made by John Duval of Grange fame?

I have been offered several bottles, but at a high price.
Should I splash out, or stay well clear?

Try and get hold of the 2003 Sono Montenidoli, the flagship estate grown chianti from Montenidoli. That is near to Florence.

This is an excellent Chianti that will cellar well.

google Montenidoli, not sure if it is exported to Australia.

TN: Alexandra Bridge CM 2001

Alexandra Bridge Cabernet Merlot 2001

An excellent cab merlot, with all the boxes ticked.
Some fruit on the nose, a brilliant smokey bouquet.
Quite long in the mouth with the characteristic blackcurrant winning out over sagey tobacco. A medium tannin giving a good structure.

Old labels should just float off the bottle if left to soak for a few hours in hot water with a little detergent. However I find it increasingly hard to remove labels from bottles produced say, post 2000. There has been a move to a more glossy paper and non water soluble adhesive is used. New world ...

None of the Mollydooker range are 18% or anything like it, high alcohol yes, but 18% no. The tasting was blind, we were going on what the tasting master would divulge. His interpretation of the alcohol content was that the Maitre'D was recorded as 15.5% but tasted like 16%, similarly the EP and CoL...

High alcohol content

At a tasting last night I was treated to the potent wines of Mollydooker. The Maitre'D Cabernet clocks in at 15.5% which is probably the highest alcohol content in any wine I have tried. Despite this, it was hard to detect the higher alcohol on the palate. It was noted that the high end wines in the...
