Re: Just back from Orange
I too do not like making appointments for the obligation thing. But everyone I spoke to said I should go try Bloodwood. They were most accommodating even when I disturbed them having afternoon tea with a friend! I bought the 08 Riesling, 08 Silk Purse (Sticky Riesling) and 07 Shiraz. It was a tough ...

Just back from Orange
Took the little munchkins to Dubbo for Western Plains Zoo and stopped by Orange on the way back to Sydney. It was a very good experience. We stayed in Serenity Studio just outside of town ( http://www.serenitystudio.com.au/ ). It is only a few months old and peaceful. Highly recommended. Pick of the...

Re: Dome Wine Cooler - Won't Cool
Those things have limited capability to cool, maybe 10 below ambient. I have returned one that died after 6 months, however the replacement unit is still going strong after 12 months. It is cheap, so dont expect too much from it and you should be happy.

Glad I could stir up some passion! By BS, I meant some of the replies to the questioned newb that brought about this most helpful post from KMP. TN are far from BS. They are, such as n4sir's here ( http://forum.auswine.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=8743 ) superb, and indeed, make me envious, both by the wi...

on Asian weddings... I concur! I am Asian, which of course allows me to freely insult Asians without being labelled a racist. The main reason wine is bad at Chinese weddings at least (err.. not all Asians are the same, despite what some think), is because the invite is usually extended to several hu...

Stillwater restaurant is very good. If you are after a pub meal during the touring try the Pier Hotel in George Town. Kinda out of Launceston the other way, pass Deloraine towards Devonport is Elizabeth Town Bakery Cafe. Its brilliant. Standout wineries were Bay of Fires (big guy) and Brook Eden (li...

Decanters - value?
OK, so wines (especially young reds) need some air, so we decant. Does it make a difference with regard to decanting in, say an ordinary jug vs a specialist wine decanter? Is the shape of the decanter important? Why? If I just want 1 glass, can I simply sit the wine in the glass for a while (and lea...

Why are you not giving them a fair go?? And why can't you name them? You seem to be happy to tar the lot with a big brush without going into specifics. GW Wow. Thanks for the replies guys. I bought some of the 2005 Domaine de Cassan Giagondas. It really is a beautiful, rich, yet balanced wine. It was fuller bodied than the others in the range, very perfumed nose, more savoury than Oz wines, with an incredibly long finish... until it got killed by other win...

Affordable Rhone vs Oz?
I tried some Rhones (Southern, mainly GSM blends, some cinsault) the other night against some (albeit, lesser) Aussie wines, and the Frenchies, in my opinion, were far superior. This is the first exploration of French wine for me, and I have to say, its left me questioning the Aussie wisdom that say...

MR & Perth restaurants?
Heading west in December. I already have a list of wineries in mind, but what about some good restaurants in Perth and in Margs? I have heard about Frasers in Kings Park, Must winebar... and not much else. Surely there are more good eats out west? Wineries I plan on visiting: Were Estate Moss Wood W...

Firestick Cafe at Pooles Rock is excellent. Was there the other week. Food is great (Rock Restaurant by night, SMH 2008 Chefs Hat), top notch service too. Esca is more formal, but good food, great views. They are my two faves at the moment. Blaxlands is good for a steak, less sophistication. Terroir...

Hunter trip - 2005 Lakes Folly Cabernets and other bits
Went to the Hunter again, though with 3 month old bub in tow, could not get to many cellar doors, but was dead keen to get to Lakes Folly. I love a good cabernet, and despite living in Sydney, had not had the opportunity to taste this cult wine. 2005 Lakes Folly Cabernets And what a wine! The 2005 i...

NSW alternates (ie not Hunter) - whats your fave?
Seems to me there are some great wines (and great wines sourcing fruit) from the "new" cool regions in NSW like Orange, Hilltops, Canberra, Tumbarumba. To date, the best Chardys I have sampled this year have been from Tumbarumba - Hungerford Hill 2005, and Penfolds Bin 311. There are some ...

Wine Storage - how hot is too hot?
At the moment, my wine sits in a box under the house. I bought one of them Hygrometer thingies from eBay, and had it there for the past week, starting with the 30 deg day we had in Sydney. It reads as follows: Temperature Min = 23 deg C Max = 25 deg C (ambient 30 deg C) Humidity Min = 61% RH Max = 6...
