Farewell Thomas Angove

I noticed on the ABC site today that the inventor of the wine cask (Mr Thomas Angove) has passed on aged 92. Even though I didn't know the man I am so glad he lived. I have had many a fine time with the contents of his invention. I would have been even sadder and lonelier throughout my years as an a...

Re: Hobart Wineries

G'day Broughy I agree with the previous suggestion but I would also recommend that your friends take the road to Richmond - a historical village and worth visiting in it's own right. The Coal Valley region has a number of great vineyards. A lot of them are concentrated along Richmond road which runs...

Re: 2009 Wines of the Year

A tough but good topic To me nominating a wine as the 'best' means it gave me a memorable experience or made me a better person. 2009 included a couple of 'better person' moments. The following wines made me question my prejudices or opened my eyes to new possibilities: 05 Elmslie cab sav (Tamar Val...

Re: What makes a good wine writer / commentator

Thanks guys Some very interesting and useful pointers here. You have given me lots to think about regarding my own writing. The mention of Oz Clarke was interesting given that SBS is (re?)running the Oz and James wine adventure at the moment. I know they are both playing up for the camera but Oz doe...

What makes a good wine writer / commentator

G'day everyone I recently became aware of the antics of Matt 'Nostradamus' Skinner with his "I don't have to drink it to know what it's like" approach to wine reviews and this got me thinking. I know he has been the subject of discussion on this forum but I wondered if we had ever attempte...

A Punter's adventures in Heathcote

G'day everyone I meant to write this ages ago but unfortunately life has a way of intervening and stopping you from doing the fun stuff from time to time. I also wanted to thank those of you who suggested wineries/vineyards to visit. The ones I got to all turned out to be fantastic so thanks a lot. ...

Re: Sunday 1st November....

G'day everyone Mystery solved. I spent two hours getting a lesson in winemaking 101 from Rick Burge who was here in sunny Hobart yesterday showing off his current range of wines and he showed me this thread. The wines he mentioned were served at the 80th birthday party for his agent's dad. By the wa...

Tasmania Unbottled 2009

G'day everyone I recently got a media release about this (my first woo hoo, although I am sure the novelty will wear off pretty quick!) but I thought people here might also be interested. If you haven't heard of it or attended in the past Tasmania Unbottled is designed to showcase a selection of Tas...

Hi Wommom I agree with the other replies about the regional aspect. Recently I went to the Red Wine Weekend in Hobart and had a chance to try a large number of Tassie Pinots (only $12 entry - talk about value for money!) and they had 2004 to 2008 vintages available for taste. What struck me was how ...

heathcote cellar door recommendations

Thanks for the tip Ric

I will go and have a look at the vineyards you have suggested. I am intrigued by your comment about attracting visitors. Is there something specific that the weekend warriors do or don't do that makes you say that?

Cheers

Interview with Andrew Hood - Wellington and Frogmore Creek

Hi Thought you may be interested in an interview I did recently with Andrew Hood. For those of you that haven't heard of him he is a legend in the Tassie wine industry having started Wellington in the 1990's. He was also a wine science lecturer at Charles Sturt. He is currently a consultant with Fro...

Heathcote cellar door recommendations

Hi

I am heading to Heathcote in mid August with a few other winers and was wondering if anyone had any cellar door recommendations? I am a fan of the big red if that helps.

cheers

Hi Unfortunately I can contribute to this thread - a bit too much if you ask me! I was at the cellar door at Bullers in Rutherglen one day and I had been saying how much I liked their Valerie range of wines when the door opened and the cellar door lady looked at me with a big smile "here's Vale...
