Re: June - What have you been buying

To follow the thread on 2009 Bordeaux's, Jon Rimmerman (Garagiste in Washington State) has weighed in on the 2010's compared to the 2009's with a provocative perspective: UPDATE: 2010 – This Year’s Vintage of the Century Now What? After 2009 was proclaimed the Vintage of the Century by...

Tanzer on New Zealand Syrahs

When I joined this forum two years ago, two Mikes (Bick and KMP) responded to my "who am I?" interest in NZ whites and pinots by predicting that NZ Syrahs would burst onto the scene in the next five years or so. My favorite reviewer, Stephen Tanzer, agreed with them in a recent online arti...

1991 Tahbilk Cabernet Sauvignon Museum Release

I've been offered a museum release of Tahbilk's 1991 Cab from a reputable source here in the US. It's my impression that Tahbilk has good staying power and that this should be fine since it is a new release of an older vintage. Has anyone had the 1991 vintage and have tasting notes?

Re: June - What have you been buying

I reversed myself and bought some 2009 Bordeaux futures, but only Sauternes...Climens, Raymond-Lafon, Coutet, Rieussec, Lafaurie-Peyraguey, Nairac, Guiraud, Doisy-Daëne, and Suduiraut. Hard to argue with consensus great reviews and prices that aren't much higher than they were in 2005. Also bough...

Re: 2002 Shiraz Tasting Notes

I've had the 04, 05, and 06 Amon Ra all when they were relatively young. The 04 was my favorite, followed by the 06. Until the 02, I would have told you that all them had a mid to long life ahead of them. And that may still be the case...poor storage has doomed the longevity of many a fine wine.

2002 Shiraz Tasting Notes

For my birthday, we opened three 2002 Shiraz wines all from Southern Australia, let them air for a couple of hours, and then tasted them over the next several hours while enjoying various appetizers, grilled porterhouse steaks with a dry rub of various peppers and salt, salad, and cake. Glaetzer Amo...

Re: Longevity of Germany Riesling-Auslese

I just pulled out some old German Auslese Reislings that I thought were getting beyond the drinking curve to see how they were faring: 1959 Karthäuserhof Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg Riesling Auslese: DOA...the cork had shriveled up and fell into the bottle when I put the slightest pressure ...

Re: 2009 Bordeaux Thread

I am holding off buying any 2009 Bordeaux's for now because there is not likely to be a shortage of the wines when they are finally shipped and there is a lot of evidence to suggest that the wine industry in some parts of the world is still in free fall with huge unsold inventories from prior vintag...

Re: Making use of sommeliers

A wine list by a sommelier is like a diary...an intimate look at the kind of person they are and where their priorities are in life. It's easy to spot the bean counters who have extraordinary markups on the most popular or sought-after wines of the day, but don't really care about the wine. And it's...

I'm married to a Cajun and her whole family is from Louisiana. Here are some of our favorites: Mother's (lunch only). It's the place for Po'boys. A veritable hole in the wall, but really good and world famous nonetheless. Commander's Palace: Classic Creole cooking in a neat setting. Always good. Caf...

Re: TN: Capel Vale Geographe Chardonnay 2005

Allan, We used a wild yeast to ferment and the winemaker really pushed for a burgundian style. Not something that we would produce for the mainstream, but interesting to play around with in the cellar exclusive range. Cheers Scott - Capel Vale Wines I've had limited exposure to wild yeast chardonna...

I had a 98 Watervale late last year. It was under screwcap. Here are my notes: "This Riesling held up impressively....good acid, good balance...now it's aging the vines to get complex tastes. Given the vibrancy of the wine, I suspect that it was never a great wine in the first place, but it was...

I sure do for a lot of reasons: 1. I don't have to type everything in most of the time except for the rare times I'm introducing a new wine to the site. 2. I can follow what others are saying about a wine. Tastings are like polls...snapshots in a moment in time. Some wines change a lot in a short pe...

I think the 2005 has nearly sold through here in the UK apart from independents ... 2006 has just hit the supermarkets.I'm just not sure it's a great QPR these days at £22 when you can get the 1996 version professionally cellared at £30 - and that can be a real wow-wow wine. I found magnums o...

Re: Happy New Year!

As for the Bin 28 I would say that a case of wine is a lot and should be enough for most. Two cases is possible but only if you have a large enough cellar to not think it the wine that you have to drink if you know what I mean. As for the best bin 28 ever? The 2006 is good but that it where it ends...

Greatest Stickies: Tokay or Muscat?

I would have told you that I like them both about the same, perhaps because I lump them together in a unique after-dinner wine category. But when I look over my tasting notes I find that I distinctly prefer muscats to tokay stickies from the high end (Chambers Rosewood Muscat Rare) to the low end (Y...
