I would agree it's still early days for Escarpment have only tried the 04 and 05 both were good but to my tastes would not say enjoyable young. Personally prefer Ata Rangi but that's my opinion and if you enjoyed the wine then buy some more I would give it at least a few years to hit it's stride tho...
Re NZ Syrah, from my limited experience, there are some pretty nice wines at the higher end, but they struggle to make wines with impact under about $30 compared to the big range of very drinkable and even cellarable Aus shiraz in that price range. That's a valid point, price wise NZ can't compete ...
Actually, what drives the cycles of wine fashion? Writers or consumers or wine lovers? What drives it is fashion itself combined with marketing and consumer taste. Let's take NZ Pinot Noir it's a relatively new wine for NZ to produce and it has a niche price point well below good French Burgundy. I...
2004 Saltram Mamre Brook Cabernet Sauvignon - No need for further comment on this wine. Unbelievably good especially at the price.
2004 Shaw & Smith M3 Chardonnay- My second bottle in as many weeks. This time paired with fresh crayfish and scallops a very fine match and an excellent wine.
Xmas Eve 1996 Henschke Julius Eden Valley Riesling - Deep golden straw in the glass, fully developed slightly austere with a fair hint of kero and a touch of lime. Very good. 2006 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Kabinett - Almost hinting at spatlese sweetness offering up a bevy of tropical ...
Lot of odd replies in this thread. Surely the point is to name current release wines rather than 1953 vintages of whatever? Um, I was just being stupid with my 1953 reference... which is probably breaking someone's rules somewhere. I mean who swizzles Grange with diet tonic? Maybe the same people w...
Richmond Grove Watervale Riesling 2004 - This went extremely well with my Tom yung goong, lovely refreshing slice of lime minerality running through the wine. Drinking superbly now, very good.
You can bet he does not use it that way. GW Got the book in front of me. Every wine gets a base of 50 points. General colour and appearance merit up to 5 points. Aroma and bouquet up to 15 points. Flavour and finish up to 20 points. Overall quality and potential for further development up to 10 poi...
That cheeses me off. NZ$24.95! Whats that about $12 in Australian money??? Why don't we get Bullnose Syrah here for $19.95? The local shops in Tas are retailing this for $54 these days. One place has it for $45 and it was "on special" for $39.99 last week. I don't buy it. I don't get the ...
If a wine is to be critiqued then any inherent faults will count against the final score, colour and appearance are always part of the final result. Are wine writers biased towards certain styles, most definately, all we ask is that they be consistent so if need be we can use the information to assi...
Te Mata Bullnose Syrah 2005 - After about 2hrs this really started to shine unfortunately I was onto my last glass by then. Class wine, needs about 3 to 5 in the cellar. Te Whare Ra Riesling 2007 - This wasn't bad but I really think Marlborough should stick to sauv. blanc as that's what this made m...
Hi all just a couple 2005 Leo Buring Claire Valley Riesling - Fresh but restrained with some nice minerality, well balanced, very good wine. 05 seems to be a cracking good year for Claire and Eden riesling. 2006 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Kabinett- All Schaefers 06's are winner's and...
Tried this on release and thought it was ok but had a bottle the other day and it seems to have gained weight, very impressed more finesse than the 04 liked it allot.
Rushed out and picked up 6 for the longhaul, allthough it's drinking pretty well now.
Most of my wine is stored offsite which offers me peace of mind and the fact I can't get to it in a hurry has been a blessing on more than one occassion.
I opened an Orlando 1994 Lawson on Friday and thought it was damn good and holding up very well. I didn't finish it so threw the last third in the fridge and pulled it out last night. Bloody hell! It was magnificent!! Makes me think its got a good 10 years left in it. Had a botlle of this about 6 m...
Thanks to all for your comments, they are all appreciated. The bulk of our wines would be consumed in the 7-10 year range. I suspected some form of mechanical air conditioning will be required and I have a max / min thermometer so I will install that. I actually want to set up a PC to data log the ...
Actually I did this for my own benefit not so long ago so I'll play along. Bordeaux and blends 18% Syrah / Shiraz 24% Cabernet Sauvignon 16% Pinot Noir 10% Merlot predominant 7% Red Total 75% Riesling 18% Chardonnay 5% Sauterne and other 2% White Total 25%
riesling is my future - still cheap at top quality levels Amen to that and long may it continue ,I still find it hard to beilieve the QPR of this variety. Ian I think I qualify for most of those reasons and the other one which always gets me is "vintage of the century" although this seems...
