Thanks for your views. Hmmm - V40SG's, i'm assuming this holds 40 bottles? If this is the case it's not big enough. Softtail & Boyeah, you both supported the excellent quality of the transtherms but feel i could get a cheaper price. Winetastic - i already have a 52 bottle lemair which after taki...

Wine fridge with sliding shelves

All I am in the market for a wine fridge with sliding shelves of at least 180 bottle capacity. Multi temperate zones are not a reqiurement. My research led me to cellar@cellar-creations.com.au but after discussions with the sales rep i was a little uncomfortable forking out ~ $5.5k for a cabinet i'v...

TN Shaw & Smith Adelaide Hills Riesling

Boring, boring boring boring.

Weak aroma, lots of acidity, weak fruit.

Hot tip of the week, dont bother with this one.

Cheers

Edit, this was 2006

Had a dinner with folks, gf and her folks. Brief impressions. Three Hills Cab Franc 01 - corked Woodlands 05 Reserve CM WOTN - wasted, all the marks of a good wine in years to come, personified the meaning of potential to build complexity. Take it from me, dont open them now show some patience. Salt...

1996 & 1998 Happs Chard query

Hi all I've recently been fortunate enough to enjoy a 1996 and 1998 Happs chardonnay. A friend of mine was influential enough to convince the CD to sell these non-for-sale show only wines. While i'm predominately a red drinker i'd have to say these 2 whites are the best wines i've had in the last 2 ...

Any ideas?

I have a good mate who opposes the merits of decanting red wine to make it better, he hasnt had any bad experiences with decanting but typically stubborn he wont give it a good shot. Without entering into the merits of decanting or not decanting can anyone nominate some reds that i could pick up for...

Question

If wine makers submit their first produced bottles from a vintage for "grading" to the likes of JO and JH etc. Wouldnt they use the best available grapes knowing that the performance score of these initial bottles will significantly impact the sale of that particular wine/vintage? ie. the ...

Gary W - may or may not do, but no question 00 Pyrus had it covered, integrated and barely showing. 01 BL oak was sticking out, bittery, & low fruit/other characters.

Tonight it was my birthday and with some mates and family we shared chronologically: Lindemans Pyrus 2000, Woodlands Cab Merlot 05, Ingoldby 02 Reserve Shiraz, Brini Sebastian Shiraz 2003, Wynns BL Cab Sauv 01. Easy choice and echoed by all - WOTN Pyrus 2000 - nose the most complex and satisfying an...

Yeah i bought it because i was well aware of the comments re: this wine but this is twice in a row its seriously failed to merit anything. IMO no where near what it was cranked out to be OR seriously bad bottle variation - I wont be buying anymore of the specials that are still floating around for it

TN: Peter Lehmann Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon 2002

No smell, very heavy toasty oak. Bitter heavy oak, no fruit. Opaque brick red. No acid, negligible tannins - despite all this no hint of cork taint what so ever on the nose. IMO unless this wine was fukt or its in somesort of unprecedented hibernation stage - its rooted. Opened one of these recently...

Ignoring the debate of the examples <$20, what are other peoples opinions along the lines of Brian's in regards to wines in the $20-$40 that are drinking way beyond the competition in that price range??

Brian, know if the Partricia 02 still around?

Tasting Impressions: Woodcutters, The Footbolt, Bin 555

Took along a Torbreck Woodcutters Shiraz 05 to dinner last night - very enjoyable. Quite sweet, a strong, pleasant, floral aroma, very smooth and thick mouthfeel. Thick and sweet enough that its probably best shared amongst three, i felt it was that half a bottle IMO was the max i'd enjoy before it ...

TN: Peter Lehmann Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon 2002

Opened bottle and based on taste decided it didnt need a decanter. Aromas that were popping into my head were dried herbs and cloves followed by a strong healthy whack of good fruit - promising. Tannins were fully intergrated and dissolved and subsequently the palate was very smooth. Colour - gettin...

Query: Can you smell tannins?

In a glass before you taste it can you identify whether the tannins are overpowering and/or all but gone? Can you infer anything about tannins from the smell?!?

TN : Rosemount Show Reserve Shiraz 2001

Unfortunately, palate seemed over oaked and was a very small hint of bitterness in the finish. Tannins were at the right level no problem there. Was...

Query: Grange Scores - Relative?

When looking through JO Wine Annual 2006, are scores assigned to Grange relative to other Grange vintages or are they relative to all wines in the annual? For example, JO Wine Annual 2006: Seppelt's Chalambar Shiraz 2002 scored 96 points, cost ~$25. JO Wine Annual 2006: Penfolds Grange 1999 Scored 9...

Andrew With respect to your tasting note for the 2003 Chalambar can you please tell me, when you leave wine over night because you've decided its to "tight" or the tannins are harsh, do you put the stopper back in the decanter or do you just let it breathe freely for like 24 hours? Cheers

Acid on the tongue?

Query: I have always being under the impression that acid on the tongue meant that the wine could probably live a little longer? Maybe do will some cellar time? But last night i was told that it was a sign that the wine had started to deteriorate. Not a vinegar taste, just acidic. Now i'm confused c...
